Biology (SL/HL)

Explore the complexity of life, from the molecular level to entire ecosystems, while developing the analytical, research, and critical thinking skills essential for success in the IB Diploma Programme. The syllabus covers cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and human physiology, with Higher Level (HL) adding greater depth to each topic and additional content such as advanced nucleic acids, metabolism, plant biology, and further physiological systems.

Both Standard Level (SL) and HL students share the same core structure, but HL demands deeper analysis, more complex application of concepts, and higher-level experimental design and evaluation skills. HL students must also handle more challenging data interpretation, extended calculations in statistical analysis, and detailed explanations of intricate biological processes—preparing them for competitive university-level science.

Many students find IB Biology challenging due to the sheer volume of content, the requirement to master precise terminology, and the need to link concepts across multiple topics. Data-based questions and experimental design tasks can be difficult without regular, guided practice. HL students often struggle with the pace of content delivery and the level of detail needed for top marks.
