Business Management (SL/HL)

THE INTEGRATION CHALLENGE

Most students struggle with DP Business Management because the course demands something textbooks don't teach: integrating multiple business functions into a coherent analysis. On the pre-seen case study, you're expected to apply marketing strategy, financial analysis, human resource challenges, and operational decisions all at once—and connect them to concepts like change, ethics, globalization, or innovation. That integration gap is where students stumble.

SL VS HL: DIFFERENT ASSESSMENT PATHS

SL and HL students both sit Paper 1 (pre-seen case study) and Paper 2 (structured questions and extended response). But here's the real difference: HL students also complete a research project as internal assessment, meaning they move from analyzing textbook case studies to choosing a real company and investigating it with genuine research methodology. SL students write a commentary on an organization of their choice, which requires less formal research design but still demands authenticity and specific evidence. Both paths ask for something students rarely get in class: moving beyond generic business knowledge to specific, evidence-based judgment about actual organizations.

EXAM PRESSURE AND THE THEORY-APPLICATION BALANCE

Under exam conditions, Paper 2's extended response questions require you to structure multi-paragraph arguments that balance business theory with practical application, all while managing time pressure. Many students either over-theorize, listing concepts without application, or under-theorize, describing scenarios without connecting to key concepts like change, ethics, or sustainability.

A tutor can help

Our DP Business Management tutors are qualified IB teachers and subject specialists. We work with you on the specific skills that determine exam success and IA/commentary quality.

BREAKING DOWN CASE STUDY METHODOLOGY

For Papers 1 and 2, we break down the pre-seen case study methodology so you learn to identify which business functions (HR, finance, marketing, operations) matter most, then practice applying the six key concepts with precision. We coach structured question technique: how to read stimulus material for clues, how to organize extended responses into clear argument chains, and how to manage time without losing depth. Through repeated practice with past papers and custom scenarios, you build the pattern recognition that transforms case study analysis from overwhelming to systematic.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT: AUTHENTICITY AND RIGOR

For internal assessment, this is where authenticity matters most. We guide you in choosing a real organization that genuinely interests you, then help you develop research questions that explore real business decisions through the lens of change, creativity, ethics, or sustainability. HL students work with us on research design, data collection, analysis frameworks, and presenting findings with academic rigor. SL students learn to move a commentary beyond surface observation into specific, evidence-backed judgment about an organization's decisions and impacts.

KOGNITY: BUILDING FOUNDATIONS ALONGSIDE TUTORING

Through Kognity's interactive platform, you access case study libraries, business simulations, and exam-style practice questions that build foundational knowledge alongside our tutoring. Our specialists use Kognity to identify gaps and reinforce concepts, ensuring your understanding is both broad and deep.

YOUR VOICE, GROUNDED IN EVIDENCE

SL and HL students need different approaches: SL focuses on Papers 1/2 clarity and thoughtful commentaries on organizations you know. HL adds research project methodology—formulating research questions, designing data collection, and presenting findings that go beyond classroom case studies. Both paths build confident, evidence-based business analysis. Your commentary or research project reflects your own analysis and conclusions. We help you structure your thinking and ground it in evidence, but your voice and judgment is what makes the work authentically yours.
