Chemistry (SL/HL)
Explore the fundamental principles that explain how matter behaves, reacts, and changes. The syllabus covers stoichiometry, atomic structure, periodicity, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox processes, organic chemistry, and measurement/analysis techniques. Students develop both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills, learning to apply chemical principles to solve problems and explain real-world phenomena.
Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students follow the same core topics, but HL includes additional depth and complexity in areas such as thermodynamics, advanced equilibrium, kinetics, and organic mechanisms. HL also requires a broader range of calculations, more abstract theory, and a deeper understanding of experimental design.
Many students find IBDP Chemistry challenging because it demands strong mathematical skills, precision in problem-solving, and the ability to integrate abstract theory with hands-on practical work. Complex multi-step calculations, interpreting unfamiliar experimental data, and applying concepts to novel situations can be especially difficult. For HL students, the pace and depth of coverage, plus the level of detail required in chemical mechanisms, often require consistent, guided practice.
A tutor can help
A tutor can help by breaking down challenging concepts, offering targeted calculation drills, providing exam technique strategies, and giving detailed feedback on lab work and Internal Assessment drafts.
Through Kognity’s interactive platform, students have access to concise explanations supported by dynamic diagrams, interactive simulations, and worked examples for complex chemical processes. Adaptive practice questions identify and strengthen weaker areas, while instant feedback accelerates learning. Exam-style questions and mark-scheme guidance prepare students for both structured calculation-based questions and extended response items, while IA resources walk them through topic selection, experimental planning, data analysis, and evaluation. By combining clear digital content with guided practice and feedback, this course equips students to succeed in IB Chemistry at both SL and HL with confidence and precision.
