Computer Science (SL/HL)

Learn how computers work, how software is created, and how technology shapes the modern world. The syllabus covers system fundamentals, computer organization, networks, computational thinking, algorithms, and programming, alongside the ethical and social implications of technology. Students develop the ability to analyze problems, design effective digital solutions, and apply computational logic in practical scenarios. Programming is taught alongside theoretical concepts, ensuring students can both understand and create technology.

Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students study the same core content, but HL extends the depth and complexity to include more advanced data structures, additional algorithm design, and greater emphasis on computational logic and abstract thinking. HL students also tackle a more challenging case study and extended assessments, requiring sophisticated programming solutions, deeper systems analysis, and advanced evaluation skills.

Many students find IBDP Computer Science challenging due to the need to master both theory and practical coding skills simultaneously, the abstract nature of computational thinking and algorithm design, and the problem-solving required under time pressure in assessments. For HL, the greater volume and complexity of content — especially advanced algorithms and data structures — can be particularly demanding.

A tutor can help

A tutor can provide step-by-step programming guidance, break down complex theory into manageable parts, give targeted feedback on code, and help students prepare for both the written exam and the Internal Assessment project.

Through Kognity’s interactive platform, students benefit from step-by-step programming tutorials, interactive diagrams, and visual representations of complex processes, making abstract ideas easier to grasp. Adaptive practice questions and coding challenges reinforce learning, while instant feedback helps students correct errors quickly. Exam-style questions and mark-scheme guidance strengthen assessment technique, and project-focused resources support the Internal Assessment from initial planning to final code documentation. This combination of rigorous academic content, personalized guidance, and interactive technology ensures students are equipped with the problem-solving, analytical, and coding skills to excel in IB Computer Science at both SL and HL.
