Economics (SL/HL)

Examine how individuals, businesses, and governments make decisions in a world of limited resources, and analyze the factors that shape economies at local, national, and global levels. The syllabus covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, the global economy, and development economics, with a strong emphasis on applying theory to real-world events. Students learn to interpret data, construct and analyze economic models, and evaluate policy options, building skills in critical thinking, quantitative analysis, and evidence-based argumentation.

Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students study the same core topics, but HL explores them in greater depth and includes additional quantitative methods and more complex evaluation tasks. HL students are expected to demonstrate stronger analytical skills and tackle more challenging assessment questions, preparing them for competitive university programs in economics, business, and related fields.

Many students find IBDP Economics challenging because of the need to apply theory to unfamiliar real-world scenarios, the requirement for precise use of diagrams and models, and the mathematical demands of HL quantitative methods. Writing clear, well-structured answers that integrate theory, evidence, and evaluation can also be difficult under timed exam conditions.
