English A: Language and Literature (SL/HL)
Learn to analyze how language and literature shape meaning, influence audiences, and reflect cultural contexts. The syllabus integrates the study of literary texts—such as novels, plays, short stories, and poetry—with a wide range of non-literary texts, including speeches, news articles, advertisements, and digital media. Students develop skills in close reading, comparative analysis, and crafting both analytical and creative written work, while exploring the interplay between text, context, and purpose.
Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) cover the same core areas: Readers, Writers and Texts, Time and Space, and Intertextuality: Connecting Texts. HL students study additional works in greater depth, complete the HL Essay (1,200–1,500 words), and are expected to demonstrate more sophisticated critical thinking, deeper textual analysis, and a broader application of theoretical concepts.
Common challenges include analyzing unfamiliar texts under timed exam conditions, integrating literary and linguistic analysis into a single cohesive argument, and writing essays that fully meet IB criteria for clarity, structure, and depth. Many students also find the Individual Oral (IO) and HL Essay demanding—particularly selecting suitable extracts or topics and sustaining a focused, well-supported argument from start to finish.
