English A: Literature (SL/HL)

Immerse yourself in the study of literature from multiple periods, cultures, and genres, developing the ability to interpret texts in depth and articulate nuanced, evidence-based arguments. The syllabus focuses exclusively on literary works—including novels, plays, short stories, poetry, and essays—exploring how writers use language, structure, and style to convey meaning. Students engage with literary theory, contextual analysis, and comparative study, building skills in critical reading, academic writing, and oral communication.

Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) follow the same core areas—Readers, Writers and Texts, Time and Space, and Intertextuality: Connecting Texts—but HL students study more works in greater depth, produce a 1,200–1,500-word HL Essay, and face more demanding assessment questions requiring complex synthesis and interpretation. HL also requires additional reading and more sophisticated application of literary concepts and terminology.

Common challenges include analyzing complex, often abstract literary texts under timed conditions, connecting works across different contexts and periods, and writing essays that are both analytical and interpretive while fully meeting IB criteria. Many students also struggle with the Individual Oral (IO), particularly selecting extracts that allow for rich discussion of both the work and its global issue. At HL, the HL Essay can be especially challenging, as it demands narrowing a broad literary idea into a focused, original research question and supporting it with precise textual evidence.

A tutor can help

A tutor can help by breaking down dense or unfamiliar texts, modelling close-reading strategies, and guiding students in selecting and developing topics for the HL Essay and IO. Tutors can also provide timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice with targeted feedback, help students strengthen thesis statements, and train them to integrate quotations seamlessly into arguments. This structured, personalized approach not only builds analytical confidence but also ensures that students’ work aligns closely with IB marking criteria.
