English B (SL/HL)
English B focuses on developing advanced language proficiency while deepening cultural understanding of the English-speaking world. The syllabus emphasizes communication skills across reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with students exploring a wide range of authentic texts—news articles, speeches, essays, literature excerpts, and multimedia sources. The course builds vocabulary, grammar, and intercultural competence, encouraging students to express ideas clearly and confidently in both formal and informal contexts.
Both SL and HL students study the five prescribed themes: Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organisation, and Sharing the Planet. HL students additionally engage with two literary works and are expected to produce more detailed written responses and demonstrate greater linguistic precision.
Common challenges include understanding nuance in authentic texts, integrating cultural and linguistic analysis in writing, and producing coherent, well-organized arguments under timed exam conditions. Students often need support with the Individual Oral (IO), particularly balancing analysis of the stimulus text with global issue discussion, as well as with Paper 1 text-type conventions and Paper 2 essay planning.
A tutor can help
A tutor can help by modelling close reading and listening strategies, providing targeted grammar and vocabulary practice, guiding students through text-type requirements, and offering structured IO rehearsal with feedback. Timed practice for Papers 1 and 2 with feedback helps students strengthen coherence, argumentation, and accuracy.
Kognity’s English B resources provide targeted grammar drills, interactive vocabulary practice, and model responses for each text type, helping students internalize exam criteria. The platform’s listening exercises and instant feedback allow students to strengthen comprehension skills, while sample IO scripts and checklists guide them in planning and rehearsing oral assessments. When paired with focused tutoring, these resources help students build confidence, accuracy, and cultural insight—preparing them for success in English B at both SL and HL.
