
Environmental Systems and Societies (SL/HL)
Explore the complex relationships between societies and the natural environment through an interdisciplinary course that combines elements of both the sciences and the humanities. The syllabus covers ecological systems, biodiversity, conservation, water and food production systems, energy resources, climate change, and environmental ethics. Students are encouraged to consider global issues alongside local case studies, developing an understanding of sustainability and the challenges of balancing human needs with environmental stewardship.
Because ESS is both a Group 3 (Individuals and Societies) and Group 4 (Sciences) subject, it requires students to integrate perspectives from multiple disciplines. This dual nature makes the subject accessible but also demanding, as students must apply scientific knowledge and critical thinking to real-world social and environmental issues. Assessments test not only factual recall but also the ability to evaluate solutions, analyze case studies, and present balanced arguments on environmental dilemmas.
Many students find ESS challenging because of the breadth of topics, the expectation to master both data analysis and essay writing, and the need to interpret diagrams, graphs, and experimental results while also constructing well-structured arguments.
