French A: Language and Literature (SL/HL)

Learn to analyze how the French language and its literature create meaning, influence audiences, and reflect cultural perspectives across the Francophone world. The syllabus integrates the study of literary texts—such as novels, plays, short stories, and poetry—with a wide range of non-literary texts, including news articles, political speeches, advertisements, and digital media. Students develop skills in close reading, comparative analysis, and crafting both analytical and creative written work, while examining the interplay between text, context, and purpose.

Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) cover the same core areas: Readers, Writers and Texts, Time and Space, and Intertextuality: Connecting Texts. HL students engage with additional works in greater depth, complete the HL Essay (1,200–1,500 words), and are expected to demonstrate more sophisticated critical thinking, nuanced textual analysis, and broader application of theoretical concepts.

Common challenges include analyzing unseen French texts under timed exam conditions, integrating literary and linguistic analysis into a single cohesive argument, and producing essays that fully meet IB criteria for clarity, structure, and depth. Many students also find the Individual Oral (IO) and HL Essay demanding—particularly in selecting suitable extracts or topics and sustaining a focused, well-supported argument throughout.

A tutor can help

Working with a native-speaking French tutor provides students with authentic linguistic input and cultural insight. A tutor can help by breaking down complex analysis into manageable steps, providing targeted practice for Paper 1 and Paper 2, guiding topic selection for the HL Essay, and offering structured IO rehearsal with constructive feedback. With this individualized support, learners gain confidence, precision, and the skills necessary to succeed in IB French A: Language and Literature at both SL and HL.
