French B (SL/HL)
French B immerses students in francophone language and culture, strengthening their ability to communicate with fluency and cultural sensitivity. The syllabus develops all four language skills—listening, reading, writing, and speaking—through engagement with diverse real-world materials, including newspaper articles, interviews, podcasts, and literary excerpts. Students explore cultural themes, broaden vocabulary, and practice writing across multiple text types, from blogs and letters to formal essays.
Both SL and HL follow the five prescribed themes (Identités, Expériences, Ingéniosité humaine, Organisation sociale, Partage de la planète), while HL students study two works of literature in greater depth and are assessed on longer, more analytical written tasks.
Typical challenges include grappling with authentic, idiomatic French in reading and listening comprehension, mastering grammar structures for accuracy, and integrating cultural knowledge into oral and written responses. The IO and HL extended writing tasks often require careful coaching to stay focused, well-organized, and aligned with IB criteria.
A tutor can help
A tutor can help by breaking down grammar and vocabulary systematically, modelling strategies for tackling dense texts, guiding topic selection for the HL Essay and IO, and providing step-by-step feedback on written and oral work. Timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice under exam conditions helps students refine structure and register.
Kognity’s adaptive platform supports French B learners with targeted grammar explanations, interactive vocabulary sets, and audio exercises to improve listening skills. Annotated sample texts model appropriate register and style, while exam-style practice questions and step-by-step writing guides demystify Paper 1 and Paper 2 expectations. Tutors can use Kognity’s IO preparation tools to help students practice spontaneous speaking and receive actionable feedback, building the confidence needed for top marks.
