German A: Language and Literature (SL/HL)

Explore how the German language and its literature create meaning, influence audiences, and reflect cultural and historical contexts. The course combines the study of literary texts—such as novels, plays, poetry, and short stories from German-speaking countries—with a wide range of non-literary texts, including journalism, speeches, advertising, and digital media. Students develop advanced skills in close reading, comparative analysis, and both analytical and creative writing, while examining the relationship between text, context, and purpose.

Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) cover the same core areas: Readers, Writers and Texts, Time and Space, and Intertextuality: Connecting Texts. HL students study additional works in greater depth, complete the HL Essay (1,200–1,500 words), and are expected to demonstrate more sophisticated critical thinking, nuanced textual analysis, and the ability to apply broader theoretical and cultural concepts.

Common challenges include:

• Analyzing unseen German texts under timed exam conditions
• Integrating linguistic and literary analysis into a single coherent argument
• Meeting IB criteria for clarity, structure, and depth in essays
• Managing the demands of the Individual Oral (IO) and HL Essay, particularly in selecting suitable extracts or topics and sustaining a well-supported argument from start to finish
