History (SL/HL)

Explore the events, ideas, and forces that have shaped societies across time and place. The syllabus encourages students to investigate multiple perspectives, evaluate historical sources, and develop well-reasoned arguments. Core themes include the nature and methods of historical inquiry, case studies from different regions, and a focus on political, social, economic, and cultural developments. Students build skills in critical analysis, source evaluation, structured essay writing, and evidence-based argumentation — essential for success in the IB Diploma Program and beyond.

Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students study the same core content, but HL students undertake an additional HL Option that allows for greater depth and breadth of historical study. HL students are expected to engage with more complex historiographical debates, demonstrate deeper analytical skills, and produce extended, comparative essays. The HL assessments also require more substantial source evaluation and synthesis of multiple case studies.

Many students find IBDP History challenging because of the volume of reading, the requirement to recall precise historical evidence under timed exam conditions, and the need to analyze and evaluate sources rather than simply recount facts. Writing clear, well-structured essays that fully address the question can also be demanding.
