Korean B (SL/HL)
You're building genuine fluency in Korean. Not just grammar notes or vocabulary lists, but the ability to think in Korean, understand native speakers, and engage with Korean culture and current events. The IB Language B course asks you to communicate authentically across five prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization, and sharing the planet. Real fluency—the kind examiners recognize—comes from instruction with someone who lives the language, not just teaches it.
Our instructors are native speakers of Korean, qualified IB educators. They don't explain Korean from a textbook. They model how the language actually works, why certain expressions matter, and how honorifics and grammar endings carry cultural meaning. That's the difference between understanding Korean and speaking it.
Common Challenges
Most students learning Korean encounter specific obstacles that standard resources don't address well.
Honorifics and grammar endings can feel arbitrary at first, but they're never random. They reflect relationships and respect. Many students memorize them without truly understanding when and why to use them. Your instructor guides you through the logic, so the pattern becomes clear and the choices automatic.
Listening comprehension trips up strong readers. Native speakers talk fast, use contracted forms, and speak idiomatically. You might understand every word in isolation but lose the thread when they're strung together naturally. We use authentic audio material from news, interviews, and media to train your ear and build the confidence to follow native-pace conversation.
For HL students, literary analysis adds another layer. The two literary works you study demand close reading and cultural context. Understanding a character's motivations or a writer's themes requires connecting language choice to cultural knowledge. Your instructor helps you develop that analytical depth.
Personalized Instruction for Real Fluency
We structure your sessions around the five prescribed themes, but we follow your exam calendar and the specific literary works your school is studying. Each session has a clear focus: mastering a particular grammar point, preparing oral responses, refining your essay writing, or deepening your analysis of a text.
When you're preparing for the Individual Oral Assessment—your presentation and conversation with the teacher—your instructor coaches you on delivery, flow, and answering questions naturally. You prepare the presentation yourself. Your instructor ensures it's polished, confident, and authentically your thinking about the topic you've chosen.
For essay writing, you draft. Your instructor reads with a specific lens: Is your argument clear? Are you supporting it with evidence from the text or cultural knowledge? Are your complex sentences actually clear, or are they just complex? You revise based on feedback. The essay that goes in for assessment is yours.
At HL, we devote time to the literary works, helping you move beyond plot summary to interpretation. Your instructor asks questions that push you toward original analysis, grounded in language and cultural understanding.
