Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) (SL/HL)
Delve into the abstract beauty of mathematics while building strong analytical and problem-solving skills. This course focuses on algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus, and proof, encouraging students to think critically, work symbolically, and solve complex, unfamiliar problems. Students also develop mathematical reasoning for theoretical applications, preparing them for degrees in mathematics, engineering, physics, and other mathematically rigorous fields.
Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) share the same core content, but HL includes more challenging calculus, advanced algebraic techniques, additional proof work, and a higher level of abstraction. HL students are expected to handle multi-step problems, sophisticated derivations, and deeper applications of calculus, requiring fluency in both symbolic manipulation and logical argumentation.
A tutor can help
Common challenges include mastering abstract concepts without real-world context, managing lengthy multi-step problems under time pressure, and applying learned methods flexibly to unfamiliar problems. Students often struggle with calculus proofs, advanced algebra, and interpreting complex function behavior. A tutor can help by breaking down abstract ideas into intuitive steps, modelling efficient problem-solving strategies, and providing tailored practice that bridges knowledge gaps and builds exam confidence.
Kognity’s interactive platform enhances learning with dynamic graphs, step-by-step worked examples, and targeted problem sets that adapt to student performance. Integrated exam-style practice and detailed mark-scheme explanations prepare students for Papers 1, 2, and 3, while guided support for the Internal Assessment ensures their project is mathematically robust and meets IB criteria.
