Norwegian A: Language and Literature (SL/HL)
Learn to analyze how the Norwegian language and its literature create meaning, shape perspectives, and reflect cultural and historical contexts, both within Norway and across the broader Scandinavian world. The course integrates the study of literary texts—such as novels, plays, short stories, and poetry from both classic and contemporary Norwegian authors—with a wide range of non-literary texts, including journalism, speeches, advertisements, and digital media. Students develop skills in close reading, comparative analysis, and both analytical and creative writing, while examining how texts interact with audience, purpose, and cultural context.
Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students study the same core areas: Readers, Writers and Texts, Time and Space, and Intertextuality: Connecting Texts. HL students study additional works in greater depth, complete the HL Essay (1,200–1,500 words), and are expected to demonstrate more advanced critical thinking, nuanced textual analysis, and a broader application of theoretical and cultural concepts.
Common challenges include:
- Analyzing unseen Norwegian texts under timed exam conditions
- Integrating linguistic and literary analysis into a single coherent argument
- Producing essays that meet IB standards for clarity, structure, and depth
- Managing the demands of the Individual Oral (IO) and HL Essay, particularly in choosing suitable extracts or topics and sustaining a well-supported argument throughout
- Engaging with literature in Norwegian, which may require connecting works to wider historical and cultural contexts
A tutor can help
Working with an experienced native Norwegian teacher provides students with authentic language input and valuable cultural insight. A tutor can help break down complex analysis into clear steps, provide targeted preparation for Paper 1 and Paper 2, guide topic selection and planning for the HL Essay, and structure IO practice with constructive feedback. With expert guidance and regular practice, learners gain confidence, precision, and the skills necessary to succeed in IB Norwegian A: Language and Literature at both SL and HL.
