Norwegian B (SL/HL)
You're studying Norwegian B because you want to understand more than what you hear at family dinner. Norwegian sounds familiar when it's spoken casually at home or in a film. But the language you're studying for the IB goes deeper. You need to catch the tonal accents that change meaning, master the registers that shift between formal speech and everyday conversation, understand what people are really saying beneath the understatement of the Norwegian character. Norwegian B takes you there.
The course is designed for students with some prior knowledge—maybe you grew up hearing Norwegian at home, or you've spent time in Norway, or you're drawn to the language for other reasons. Whatever brought you to this point, Norwegian B means developing real fluency: understanding spoken Norwegian across regional dialects, writing with accuracy and confidence for multiple purposes, and understanding how language carries Norwegian cultural values. You'll work with authentic texts from contemporary Norway—speeches and opinion pieces that reflect Janteloven and social equality, films that grapple with Norwegian identity, noir novels that explore ambition and morality in an egalitarian society, articles about contemporary social issues. The five core themes that structure the course—Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, and Sharing the Planet—are the same ones you'll encounter in Norwegian media, in classrooms, in how Norwegians think and talk about their world.
Whether you're aiming for the Individual Oral, preparing for Paper 1 (writing) and Paper 2 (listening and reading), or building the cultural fluency that comes from understanding not just words but what those words mean in context, Norwegian B at CHAPTR is taught by native speakers who know exactly where students get stuck in this language.
