Norwegian B (SL/HL)

Norwegian B is designed for students who already have some prior knowledge of the language and wish to further develop their fluency, accuracy, and cultural awareness. The course emphasizes practical communication skills while also exploring how language reflects the culture and society of Norway and the wider Scandinavian context. Students work with a variety of text types, including articles, speeches, advertisements, film, digital texts, and, at HL, literary extracts.

Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students study the five prescribed themes: Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, and Sharing the Planet. HL students are also required to read selected works of literature in Norwegian, analyzing them in greater depth and demonstrating higher levels of linguistic control and cultural understanding.

Common challenges include:

  • Mastering Norwegian grammar, particularly verb conjugations, prepositions, and sentence structure
  • Expanding vocabulary to express complex ideas across a variety of themes
  • Communicating effectively under exam conditions, balancing accuracy and fluency in both writing and speaking
  • Preparing for the Individual Oral (IO), where students must respond to visual stimuli and link their discussion to cultural themes
  • Reading and analyzing literature at HL, requiring deeper engagement with cultural and historical perspectives in Norwegian texts

A tutor can help

An experienced native Norwegian teacher can support students in overcoming these challenges by reinforcing grammar through active use, building thematic vocabulary, and practicing oral expression in authentic contexts. Tutors also provide structured preparation for Papers 1 and 2, support in analyzing literary texts at HL, and guided rehearsal for the IO with constructive feedback. With individualized support, students develop the confidence, precision, and cultural insight needed to succeed in IB Norwegian B at both SL and HL.
