Philosophy (SL/HL)

Examine fundamental questions about knowledge, reality, ethics, and the human condition while developing skills in critical thinking, logical reasoning, and structured argumentation. The syllabus introduces students to core philosophical themes, prescribed texts, and optional themes such as political philosophy, philosophy of religion, or philosophy of mind. Students also study a “Philosophy in the Contemporary World” component, applying philosophical analysis to real-world issues.

Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students cover the same core content, but HL requires deeper engagement with more complex philosophical arguments, extended essays, and a more demanding “HL Extension” topic that focuses on in-depth analysis of philosophical methods and theories. HL students are expected to produce more sophisticated critical evaluations, demonstrate a broader range of perspectives, and engage with philosophical scholarship at a level approaching university study.

Common challenges include understanding abstract concepts, interpreting dense philosophical texts, and developing coherent, well-supported arguments under timed exam conditions. Many students also find it difficult to balance clarity of writing with depth of analysis, or to connect philosophical theories to contemporary issues.

A tutor can help

A tutor can help by breaking down complex arguments into clear steps, modelling analytical essay structures, providing guided practice with past-paper questions, and offering personalized feedback on both written and oral argumentation skills.

Kognity’s interactive platform supports learning with concise, accessible explanations of philosophical ideas, integrated glossary tools, and case studies that link theory to modern contexts. Self-marking quizzes and adaptive practice questions help students test understanding and refine reasoning skills, while exam-style tasks with mark-scheme guidance prepare them for all assessment components, including the Internal Assessment. For HL students, dedicated resources support their extended essays and complex comparative analysis. By combining rigorous academic content with clear digital resources and targeted tutor support, this course enables students to confidently tackle IB Philosophy at both SL and HL.
