Portuguese A: Language and Literature (SL/HL)
Expert Tutoring to Bridge the Gap Between Fluency and Academic Excellence
At CHAPTR House of Education, our role is to mentor students through the rigors of the IB Portuguese A curriculum. While the course invites students to explore how language shapes meaning across the Lusophone world, our tutors provide the structured, one-on-one guidance necessary to translate that exploration into high-scoring analytical work.
We work with students to master the study of literary works (novels, plays, poetry) alongside a diverse range of non-literary "bodies of work"—from journalism and political speeches to digital media and film.
The CHAPTR Tutoring Approach
We align our support with the three central pillars of the IB syllabus, ensuring students don't just understand the content, but can analyze it through an IB lens:
- Readers, Writers, and Texts: Our tutors help students deconstruct an author’s choices (diction, syntax, structure) and evaluate how diverse audiences interpret them.
- Time and Space: We provide the historical and cultural context of Brazil, Portugal, and Lusophone Africa to help students root their analysis in specific social realities.
- Intertextuality: We guide students in discovering the "dialogue" between texts, genres, and media to build sophisticated comparative arguments.
Overcoming the "Fluency Trap"
A common challenge for native and heritage speakers is the transition from everyday Portuguese to Academic Portuguese. Our tutors act as specialists who help students navigate:
- Paper 1 Strategy: We provide the frameworks for analyzing "unseen" texts under strict timed conditions, moving beyond summary to deep evaluation.
- The Individual Oral (IO) Mentorship: We assist students in identifying a nuanced Global Issue and structuring a 15-minute presentation that balances literary and non-literary evidence.
- The HL Essay (1,200–1,500 words): For Higher Level students, we act as research mentors, guiding the transition from an initial idea to a polished, independent critical analysis.
- Comparative Writing (Paper 2): We teach the specific essay structures required to compare and contrast two literary works without losing focus on the central thesis.
How CHAPTR Tutors Deliver Results
Our native-speaking tutors are experts in the IB Assessment Criteria. We don't just teach the language; we teach the "IB-speak" and the analytical precision required for a 7.
Writing & Research Guidance
