Psychology (SL/HL)
Explore how human thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are shaped by biological, cognitive, and sociocultural factors. The syllabus introduces students to research methods, ethics, and the application of psychological theory to real-world issues, encouraging them to evaluate evidence and consider multiple perspectives. Students investigate key topics such as memory, learning, mental health, social influence, and brain function, building critical thinking, research literacy, and analytical writing skills.
Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students study the same core approaches and options, but HL requires deeper engagement with additional qualitative and quantitative research methods, more complex evaluation of theories, and an extended Paper 3 exam focused on research methodology. HL students are also expected to synthesize and critique studies at a higher level, preparing them for further studies in psychology and related disciplines.
Common challenges include managing the high volume of content and case studies, remembering key studies in sufficient detail for exams, applying theory to unfamiliar scenarios, and writing well-structured analytical essays under time constraints. Students often struggle with research method questions that require both conceptual understanding and practical application.
A tutor can help
A tutor can help by providing memory strategies for studies, modelling effective essay structures, clarifying complex theories, and offering targeted feedback on practice essays and data analysis tasks.
Kognity’s interactive platform supports learning with concise explanations, visual summaries, and interactive timelines that help students connect theories and studies. Adaptive practice questions identify weak areas, while exam-style questions and mark-scheme guidance strengthen analytical and evaluative writing skills. Dedicated Internal Assessment resources guide students through designing, conducting, and analyzing their own research in compliance with IB ethical guidelines. Combined with one-to-one tutoring, this approach ensures students are confident, well-prepared, and able to excel in IB Psychology at both SL and HL.
