Russian B (SL/HL)
Russian B is designed for students who already have some prior knowledge of the language and wish to develop greater fluency, accuracy, and cultural awareness. The course emphasizes practical communication skills while also building an understanding of how language reflects social, historical, and cultural contexts in the Russian-speaking world. Students work with a variety of text types, ranging from everyday communications and media articles to literary extracts, film, and digital texts.
Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students study the five prescribed themes: Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, and Sharing the Planet. HL students are expected to read additional literary texts in Russian and engage with them at greater depth, demonstrating more advanced language control and cultural analysis.
Key challenges for students often include mastering complex Russian grammar (such as case endings and verb aspects), expanding vocabulary to express nuanced ideas, and developing strategies to communicate effectively under exam conditions. The Paper 1 writing task, Paper 2 reading and listening comprehension, and Individual Oral (IO) all require not only linguistic accuracy but also cultural understanding and adaptability of register.
A tutor can help
An experienced Russian-speaking tutor can provide targeted guidance in these areas: helping students strengthen grammar through practical usage, expand vocabulary with thematic practice, and refine oral expression through regular conversation and IO rehearsal. For HL students, a tutor can also support close reading of Russian literature, guiding them to connect texts with broader cultural and historical contexts. Through consistent practice, feedback, and tailored strategies, learners gain both the confidence and precision needed to succeed in IB Russian B at SL and HL.
