Spanish A: Language and Literature (SL/HL)
Learn to analyze how the Spanish language and its diverse literatures create meaning, shape perspectives, and reflect cultural contexts across the Spanish-speaking world. The syllabus integrates the study of literary texts—such as novels, plays, poetry, and short stories from Spain and Latin America—with a wide range of non-literary texts, including journalism, political speeches, advertising, film, and digital media. Students develop skills in close reading, comparative analysis, and crafting both analytical and creative written work, while exploring the relationship between text, context, and purpose.
Both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students study the same core areas: Readers, Writers and Texts, Time and Space, and Intertextuality: Connecting Texts. HL students engage with additional works in greater depth, complete the HL Essay (1,200–1,500 words), and are expected to demonstrate more advanced critical thinking, nuanced textual analysis, and a wider application of theoretical concepts.
Students often find challenges in analyzing unfamiliar Spanish texts under timed exam conditions, blending literary and linguistic analysis into a cohesive argument, and writing essays that fully meet IB requirements for clarity, structure, and depth. The Individual Oral (IO) and the HL Essay can also be demanding, requiring careful topic or extract selection and the ability to sustain a focused, well-supported argument throughout.
A tutor can help
Working with a native Spanish-speaking tutor provides authentic linguistic input and cultural insight, helping students strengthen both their analytical and expressive abilities. A tutor can guide students step by step through complex analysis, provide targeted practice for Paper 1 and Paper 2, support topic development for the HL Essay, and offer structured IO rehearsal with constructive feedback. With expert guidance, learners gain confidence, precision, and the skills needed to succeed in IB Spanish A: Language and Literature at both SL and HL.
