Spanish B (SL/HL)
Spanish B enables students to achieve advanced proficiency in Spanish while exploring the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Students develop receptive, productive, and interactive skills through a wide range of authentic sources—news reports, interviews, short stories, and digital media—encouraging them to interpret meaning and respond effectively in speech and writing. Emphasis is placed on cultural awareness, grammatical accuracy, and stylistic flexibility across different text types.
Both SL and HL cover the five prescribed themes: Identidades, Experiencias, Ingenio humano, Organización social, and Cómo compartimos el planeta. HL students additionally read and analyze two works of literature and are expected to produce more in-depth, critically reflective written work.
Common challenges include parsing complex listening passages, expanding vocabulary to express sophisticated ideas, and writing essays that integrate cultural context smoothly and meet IB’s formal text-type conventions. Students may also struggle with the IO, particularly maintaining a clear focus on the global issue while analyzing the stimulus and their chosen work.
