Chinese

At CHAPTR House of Education, our tutors support students at every stage of their Chinese learning journey — from Middle School beginners to High School students preparing for the IB Diploma Programme. Our Chinese tutors are native Mandarin speakers, fully certified and experienced in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and as a heritage language.

We work with students who follow their school’s Chinese sequence (Chinese I, II, III, and IV), and we align our approach with the CEFR Framework (A1–C2) so parents understand exactly where their children are and what they need to reach the next level.

How School-Based Chinese Levels Compare to CEFR

School CourseApprox. CEFR LevelStudent Abilities
Chinese IA1 (Beginner)Understand and use basic everyday words and phrases; introduce themselves; use simple sentences.
Chinese IIA2 (Elementary)Communicate about daily life; describe experiences; understand short conversations and texts.
Chinese IIIB1 (Intermediate)Participate in longer conversations; express opinions; understand authentic spoken and written Chinese.
Chinese IVB1+/B2 (Upper Intermediate)Discuss abstract topics; read longer texts; express ideas clearly; explore cultural themes.

Chinese IV students are typically approaching the level required for IB Chinese B and may begin bridging toward IB Chinese A, especially heritage speakers.

Chinese I

In Chinese I, students are introduced to the foundations of Mandarin: greetings, self-introduction, numbers, family, school, and everyday activities. They learn pinyin (phonetic system), basic characters, tones, and simple sentence structures.

A common challenge at this level is mastering pronunciation and tones, as well as remembering new characters. Students often understand more than they can actively use.

A tutor helps by reinforcing classroom learning through pronunciation practice, character exercises, and guided conversation. We help students build a strong foundation, develop accurate tone habits, and gain confidence speaking and writing basic Chinese.

Chinese II

Chinese II expands students’ abilities to talk about daily routines, past experiences, and future plans. Students learn more characters, develop reading skills, and begin writing short paragraphs.

Students often struggle with character retention, combining grammar structures, and speaking more spontaneously.

A tutor provides structured character review, conversation practice, and personalized explanations. With regular feedback and guided exercises, students improve their fluency, reading ability, and overall confidence.

Chinese III

Chinese III moves students toward intermediate proficiency. Students discuss broader topics such as culture, traditions, current events, and personal viewpoints. They read longer passages and write more detailed compositions.

Common challenges include understanding authentic materials, expressing ideas clearly, and maintaining accuracy when speaking and writing.

Our tutors support students by strengthening reading strategies, expanding vocabulary, and developing more natural speaking ability. We help students express ideas clearly and prepare for upper-level coursework.

Chinese IV

Chinese IV prepares students for advanced communication and academic work. Students explore literature, cultural topics, global themes, and authentic materials from the Chinese-speaking world.

Challenges include reading complex texts, understanding nuance, and producing well-structured essays using appropriate academic language.

Our tutors help students interpret texts, refine writing skills, and develop advanced speaking ability. We prepare students for success in advanced high school courses and the transition to IB Chinese.
