Dutch
At CHAPTR House of Education, our Dutch tutoring program offers a comprehensive and adaptable curriculum for learners aged 11–16, combining the strengths of Dutch and Belgian educational standards with the analytical rigor of the International Baccalaureate framework. We provide 60 minutes of individualized instruction per week, with the option to add weekly practice plans for home or partnered schools.
We use the Nieuw Nederlands method by Noordhoff, offering both vmbo and havo/vwo trajectories to ensure each learner progresses at a level that is both appropriate and challenging. Students who wish to deepen their literary knowledge may pursue further study through Nieuw Nederlands Literatuur, strengthening their understanding of literary genres, styles, and analytical approaches.
Recognizing the cultural and academic value of multilingualism, our tutors integrate principles of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and prepare motivated students for IBDP Dutch A. Lessons build strong foundations in reading comprehension, grammar, academic and creative writing, textual interpretation, and literary analysis. Students engage in reading projects, book reports, and critical discussions while working with high-quality digital platforms such as Bingel, Nieuw Nederlands Online, Juf Melis, and Junior Einstein.
Across all pathways, CHAPTR emphasizes essential language skills—listening, reading, writing, and speaking—while promoting critical thinking and cultural awareness. This structured progression prepares students for future academic success, including the advanced reading strategies, refined interpretation, and precise written expression needed for IB Dutch.

Dutch I (A1)
In Dutch I, students build foundational skills by learning to communicate about familiar topics such as daily routines, hobbies, family, and school. They begin reading short texts, learning essential spelling patterns, and writing simple sentences and short descriptions.
A CHAPTR tutor helps reinforce these fundamentals through guided conversation, structured repetition, and clear explanations of grammar rules like verb conjugation, word order, and basic vocabulary building. Students progress from isolated words to full sentences and begin developing confidence in reading and writing.
Dutch II (A2)
Dutch II expands communication abilities, introducing longer texts, short paragraphs, and more structured writing. Students learn present and past verb forms, prepositions, conjunctions, and more complex sentence patterns. They read youth literature, news snippets, and short informational texts.
A CHAPTR tutor supports this transition by breaking grammar down step-by-step, guiding students through reading strategies, encouraging more confident speech, and helping students apply grammar naturally during communication. By the end of Dutch II, students communicate more independently and prepare for intermediate-level tasks.
Dutch III (A3)
At the intermediate stage, students begin deeper academic work. They read longer texts, interpret meaning beyond the surface, and analyze themes, characters, and perspectives. Grammar includes relative clauses, advanced verb forms, and accurate sentence structure.
A CHAPTR tutor provides structured conversation practice, models academic vocabulary, and teaches effective strategies for comprehension and analytical writing. Students explore cultural topics, Dutch and Flemish traditions, current events, and introductory literary analysis. By the end of this stage, students can engage in more nuanced discussion and sustained writing.
Dutch IV (B1+/B2)
Dutch IV prepares students for advanced communication and academic pathways, including MYP Dutch, IB Dutch B, and IB Dutch A. Students read fiction and nonfiction, analyze literary techniques (thema, motief, perspectief, stijlmiddelen), write structured essays, and participate in analytical discussions.
A CHAPTR tutor guides students through complex texts, helps them interpret cultural and historical references, and supports them with extended writing tasks. Students develop the precision and sophistication needed for higher-level study and international programs.
For Native and Heritage Dutch Speakers
Native and heritage speakers of Dutch often have strong conversational fluency but need structured academic support to master formal literacy, expand vocabulary, and build the analytical skills required for IB Dutch A: Language & Literature and IB Dutch A Literature.
At CHAPTR, tutors guide heritage learners through the Nieuw Nederlands curriculum at vmbo or havo/vwo levels, ensuring they develop accurate spelling, grammar, academic writing, and advanced reading comprehension. They work with authentic Dutch and Flemish texts to bridge the gap between home-language familiarity and academic proficiency.
A central part of our approach for heritage learners is the integration of culture, history, and identity, helping students understand how language connects them to Dutch-speaking communities worldwide.
Themes include
- Canonical and contemporary Dutch and Flemish literature
- Dutch-speaking history: the Golden Age, colonial history, emancipation, modern society
- Cultural traditions, regional identities, and linguistic diversity
- Current events, social debates, and media literacy
- Multilingual identity and belonging in global contexts
Tutors support students with literary analysis (thema, motief, perspectief, stijlmiddelen), oral assessments, and structured essays. With individualized guidance and regular feedback, heritage learners develop the academic Dutch needed for high-level coursework, including IB Dutch A, while deepening their understanding of their cultural identity.
