Italian

At CHAPTR House of Education, our tutors support students at every stage of their Italian learning journey — from Middle School beginners to High School students preparing for the IB Diploma Programme. Our Italian tutors are native speakers, fully certified and experienced in teaching Italian both as a foreign language and as a heritage language.

We work with students who follow their school’s Italian sequence (Italian I, II, III, and IV), and we align our approach with the CEFR Framework (A1–C2) so parents understand exactly where their children are and what they need to reach the next level.

How School-Based Italian Levels Compare to CEFR

School CourseApprox. CEFR LevelStudent Abilities
Italian IA1 (Beginner)Understand and use basic everyday words and phrases; introduce themselves; use simple sentences.
Italian IIA2 (Elementary)Communicate about daily life; describe experiences; understand short conversations and texts.
Italian IIIB1 (Intermediate)Participate in longer conversations; express opinions; understand authentic spoken and written Italian.
Italian IVB1+/B2 (Upper Intermediate)Discuss abstract topics; read longer texts; express ideas clearly; explore cultural themes.

Italian IV students are typically approaching the level required for IB Italian B and may begin bridging toward IB Italian A, especially heritage speakers.

Common Difficulties

Students learning Italian often face specific challenges due to the structure and expressiveness of the language:

  • Mastering verb conjugations across multiple tenses and moods (including the subjunctive, which is essential in Italian)
  • Understanding gender and agreement, including adjectives and past participles
  • Using correct word order while maintaining natural, fluid expression
  • Expanding vocabulary beyond everyday language into academic and abstract topics
  • Listening to native-speed Italian, including regional accents and natural speech patterns
  • Speaking with confidence and using connected, expressive language rather than isolated sentences
  • Writing clearly structured paragraphs with correct grammar and varied vocabulary
  • Reading authentic Italian texts, including articles, short stories, and cultural materials
  • Understanding idiomatic expressions and culturally embedded language
  • Transitioning from communicative language use to analytical and academic thinking required for IB

Italian I

In Italian I, students are introduced to the foundations of the language: greetings, self-introduction, numbers, family, school, and everyday activities. They learn pronunciation, essential vocabulary, and basic sentence structures.

A common challenge at this level is mastering pronunciation and building confidence in speaking, especially with Italian’s vowel clarity and rhythm. Students often understand more than they can actively produce.

A tutor helps by reinforcing classroom learning through pronunciation practice, vocabulary building, and guided conversation. We help students develop a strong foundation and feel comfortable speaking Italian from an early stage.

Italian II

Italian II expands students’ ability to communicate about daily routines, past experiences, and future plans. Students begin using a wider range of verb tenses and develop reading and writing skills.

Students often struggle with verb conjugations (especially past tenses like passato prossimo vs imperfetto), combining grammar structures, and speaking more spontaneously.

A tutor provides structured grammar explanations, conversation practice, and personalized feedback. With regular guidance, students improve fluency, accuracy, and confidence.

Italian III

Italian III moves students toward intermediate proficiency. Students engage with broader topics such as Italian culture, traditions, current events, and personal viewpoints. They read longer texts and write more developed compositions.

Common challenges include understanding authentic materials, expressing ideas clearly, and maintaining grammatical accuracy across longer responses.

Our tutors support students by strengthening reading strategies, expanding vocabulary, and helping them speak more naturally and confidently. We also begin introducing more structured argumentation and analysis.

Italian IV

Italian IV prepares students for advanced communication and academic work. Students explore literature, cultural topics, global issues, and authentic materials from Italy and the wider Italian-speaking world.

Challenges include reading complex texts, understanding nuance and tone, and producing well-structured essays using appropriate academic language.

Our tutors help students interpret texts, refine writing, and develop sophisticated speaking skills. We also begin bridging toward IB expectations, including analytical thinking and formal expression.
