Focus by Level
Korean A1 (Beginner) — Grades 6–7
Approximate CEFR Level: A1
Students begin by mastering Hangul, the foundation of Korean literacy. They develop foundational listening and speaking skills in everyday contexts, learning how to introduce themselves, describe daily routines, and communicate basic needs.
Reading focuses on Hangul recognition and simple, short texts. Students build active listening skills through songs, simple media clips, and classroom interactions. Speaking practice emphasizes accurate pronunciation and confidence in common exchanges. Early writing activities include basic sentence construction and simple personal descriptions.
Throughout this level, students encounter the concept of respectful speech (존댓말 vs. 반말). Understanding this distinction early reveals how Korean language reflects cultural values of respect and social awareness. This cultural lens makes the grammar meaningful, not arbitrary.
By the end of A1, students can handle basic daily situations, recognize Korean in real-world contexts, and begin building the foundational skills across listening, speaking, reading, and writing that will deepen in subsequent levels.
Korean A2 (Elementary) — Grade 8
Approximate CEFR Level: A2
Students increase vocabulary and begin connecting sentences with natural flow. Conversations expand to include hobbies, school life, food, family, and everyday activities. This is where students develop more confidence in speaking and listening accuracy.
Reading becomes more varied. Students work with simple menus, signs, short messages, and authentic materials that help them recognize Korean in real-world contexts. Listening activities progress from classroom speech to more natural, authentic content.
Cultural understanding deepens. Students explore how Korean honorifics work in context, practice different speech levels in different social situations, and begin understanding how language and culture intertwine. They see that Korean isn't just a code to crack, but a way of expressing respect, hierarchy, and relationship that matters in Korean society.
Writing tasks become more structured. Students write simple descriptions, short personal reflections, and guided opinion pieces. The four core language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) are now clearly integrated across authentic materials and real communication tasks.
Korean B1 (Intermediate) — Grades 9–10
Approximate CEFR Level: B1
This is where students build toward IB readiness. Vocabulary expands significantly, and sentence structure becomes more complex and natural. Students can participate in longer conversations, express and justify opinions, and describe experiences using multiple past tenses and varied sentence structures.
A major focus at this level is mastering honorifics and speech registers. Students learn to use formal, informal, and casual speech appropriately in different contexts. This isn't mechanical rule-following; it's understanding how Korean language choices communicate respect, closeness, and social awareness. Heritage speakers often find this level brings family language patterns into conscious, academic focus.
Reading materials become more substantial and varied. Students read short literary excerpts, contemporary Korean news articles, social media posts, and longer authentic texts. They build analytical skills alongside language skills, preparing them for the literary analysis demanded in IB Korean A.
Listening includes authentic content at natural speed: podcasts, film clips, interviews, and contemporary Korean media. Students develop the ability to understand main ideas and supporting details in complex speech.
Writing becomes more analytical. Students write structured paragraphs, personal essays, and responses to prompts that ask them to synthesize information and express perspective. Accuracy, fluency, and the ability to organize ideas in writing all mature at this level.
By the end of Grade 10, students have the linguistic foundation and cultural knowledge needed to succeed in IB Korean B (Standard and Higher Level) or Korean A: Language & Literature, with particular advantage for students with heritage connections to Korean.
